Things To Consider Before You Buy A Wall Mounted Wine Rack

Storing wine is key to enjoying wine, so it is important to consider how you manage your wine stores.

Firstly you will need to have some idea as to how much wine you are planning to keep and then choose a suitable location. Many people choose to have a main storage area for long term wines and then a more accessible area which they will keep stocked with their ‘everyday’ wines. The main wine storage should in a bit tucked away. You do not want your wine kept where it is at risk of being knocked into.

Temperature is an important consideration. If the temperature of your wine storage fluctuates then there is a risk that the constant changing will affect the cork and in turn will let oxygen into the bottle and ruin the wine. When selecting the area, if it is not naturally the correct temperature, then at least choose an area where it can be easily managed and controlled.

Now that you have the location and climate you need to decide on a rack. I am a big fan of the wall mounted wine rack. Most obviously they are secure. This is essential for your own peace of mind. A good wine rack should be stable, this usually means that it is also quite heavy, and a heavy rack which is not well secured is a dangerous wine rack. A wall mounted wine rack will be safe for both you and your wine.

What do you need to consider before you buy your wall mounted wine rack? Wine should be stored at a gradient slightly lower than horizontal; this ensures that there is constant pressure from the wine against the cork to prevent the cork from drying out. All good wine racks should be designed with this in mind. Some companies are producing wine racks which are modular.

This means that you buy them in different shapes and sizes and put them together to best fit the area you have. This is much cheaper than getting a bespoke wine rack built. The interest in wine has hugely increased over the last ten years, and as a result there is now a greater choice of wall mounted wine racks. The modern wine rack does not have to be the simple wooden structure that your parents would have had for six or twelve bottles of wine. A wall mounted wine rack can be in a modern and attractive style as well as practical.

Obviously a wall mounted wine rack needs to attach to a wall. The fittings to the wall should be substantial. It is pointless to have a wall mounted wine rack if you are getting no added benefit from the wall! If you do not feel confident fitting the rack to the wall get someone to help you, if it falls over after you have stocked the wine rack it will have been a very costly experiment!

It is worth remembering that a good wine rack should not need to be replaced, so spend a little time and money on one and then you can get back to spending your time selecting and enjoying your wine!
